Designing wedding Gowns.

April 10, 2012 § Leave a comment

We had a really enjoyable evening at David Frank in Lancaster on Tuesday,3rd of April, where we show cased some of our designs and ideas in a bridal evening and fashion show.

My Mum came up to me after the show and said…’beautiful!’ (as mums do!!) and then told me how lovely the burgandy dress would be in Ivory! She’s right of course, it would! Its so difficult to show every idea, in every colour and detail! There are so many ideas around, and each brides wants a different look, for her wedding day.

Being a designer is all about creating, for each different client, designing for there personality and making their wedding gown dreams come true! The brides who come to me want to make that individual statement, they want a gown which nobody else will have and which has their own personal ‘wow’ factor!

The gowns we show are just ideas, and show our workmanship and different colours and details. My brides all have their own ideas, which I turn into a reality for them and im proud to do so, and im proud to be part of their wedding day.

I was delighted to be the focus of a two page profile in the local Visitor newspaper last week. Covering my 15 years in the bridal business, from the post-graduate business to the forming of Jennifer Pritchard Couchman, the successful boutique and working studio at The Storey in Lancaster.

Interviewed by Holly Blackwell, the article discusses my early days, my career, my inspirations and how I design and create the bespoke couture bridal gowns. Of course, it also describes my own bridal gown, and the story of my engagement! You can the read the article below:

An introduction to Bridal Design by Jennifer Pritchard Bridal

If you are a bride to be, you will probably be consumed by all the different tasks involved in planning your wedding, and of course looking at all the different ideas and options to find your dream wedding gown.

One option for the bride to be is to have a gown designed, personally for her, creating a one off wedding dress which would have everything in the design which the bride hopes for, fitting to perfection.

To have your gown designed is different to making a purchase in a shop as the gown is designed and manufactured in house and the bride has opportunity be involved in the development of the gown by expressing personal hopes and feelings because all the design elements the bride wishes for are created in her own personal made to measure wedding gown. Time scales to have a bridal gown created generally start from a minimum of 6 months.

The process of design begins with an initial consultation where the designer establishes all the aspirations which the bride wishes for in her gown. This relaxed consultation can be an opportunity to discuss  current and future trends which the bride may want to include in the design . Quite often, the most cotemporary classic designs don’t follow any trend but may be an idea or aspiration which the bride may have from childhood or a particular theme which she may wish to include.

A design package is created where the bride can come and view the designs, fabrics and detailing which may be used on the gown. Once the design has been selected the bride will have a toile fitting where the gown bodice is created in calico cotton and this information is placed back onto the brides patterns to start the development of the gown. This is a great opportunity to decide exactly where the neckline, length of bodice and fit of the gown are to be decided. The gown is then created and the bride enjoys fittings seeing the development of her own personal dream wedding dress, with complimentary Champagne at fittings.

The studio guides the bride completely regarding all relevant decision regarding the development of the gown. This personal relationship enables the bride and designer to enjoy a personal experience and relaxed friendship which is a fantastic basis for a dream wedding gown to be created and completed.

Our studio prides it self on designing for the individual. We consider the whole ethos of the wedding theme and also the brides personal attributes, including height, shape, skin tone and hair colour. These are all very important factors for the creation of a perfectly created bespoke wedding gown.

Trends for 2011 continue to use an obvious romantic feel including soft tulles and organza’s, flower detail, folds of silk and sculpted effects, fishtail and tulip silhouettes. Detailing such as feathers will also be popular in the future seasons design.

Our studio prides itself on creating stunning one off creations of bridal gowns. Jennifer has worked in bridal design for 14 years and takes pride in her knowledge and expertise in this field. Jennifer also teaches fashion design at degree level at various universities throughout the North West.

We deliver perfection through choice and passion.
